Abu Dhabi’s ambitious goal to introduce flying taxis is near, as nation’s first hybrid heliport is approved and is in plans.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, the regulator, announced on Wednesday that it has approved the heliport design for the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal in Zayed Port.
Both conventional helicopters and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, including the Midnight flying taxi from US-based Archer Aviation, will be able to land at the heliport.
It is a significant advancement in the emirate’s attempts to offer sustainable air transportation and was created in a strategic collaboration between AD Ports Group, Falcon Aviation Services and Archer Aviation.
The location at Zayed Port receives over 650,000 people a year and serves as a gateway to the emirate’s attractions including the Saadiyat Cultural District and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, further solidifying the reasons for the site being selected.
The UAE’s steadfast dedication to innovation and worldwide leadership in advanced air mobility is reflected in this milestone, which goes beyond infrastructure, according to GCAA Director General Saif Al Suwaidi.
By working together with Archer, AD Ports Group and Falcon Aviation Services, we are paving the way for a time when high-tech, environmentally friendly air travel will be an integral feature of our cityscape. With this permission, civil aviation enters a new era supported by collaboration and ambition.
A regulatory framework that will regulate the safe and effective use of quickly changing air transport services has been finalised by the GCAA and is scheduled for publication in July.
“A key component of our launch strategy is utilising current aviation assets,” stated Adam Goldstein, CEO and co-founder of Archer.
“It enables us to proceed fast and securely, preparing vital infrastructure before our scheduled commercial air taxi launch.”
The hybrid heliport will be a major starting point for Abu Dhabi air taxi services and has plans to start out by 2026,
The Corniche, Saadiyat Island and other few parts of Abu Dhabi city have been named by Archer Aviation as some of the most potential locations for its electric air taxi service.
As mentioned by Nikhil Goel, Archer Aviation’s chief commercial officer, mentioned to The National “A network will be unveiled in “the near future,”.
The company intends to set up its first international headquarters and manufacturing facility in the capital and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office is collaborating with the company to make the city its first international launch location.
According to Mr. Goel, Archer will begin commercial operations with “less than five” air taxis, each of which can carry four passengers plus the pilot and travel more than 161 kilometres at a maximum speed of 241 kilometres per hour.
After ensuring that everything is operating as intended and that everyone has a positive customer experience, he stated , “We’ll scale as much as the demand can accommodate.”
Before commercial operations start, Archer Aviation will do extensive testing to make sure the vehicles are safe and dependable for use. According to Mr. Goel, the first Midnight eVTOL will arrive in Abu Dhabi this summer and go through test flights.
